Which calibration file should I use and where to point the UMIK-1?
We provide two calibration files to be used depending on your application.
– For stereo system (e.g. 2ch dirac live, single speaker measurement), use the 0deg file and point the UMIK-1 at the speakers
– For multichannel system (E.g. 5.1/7.1) or a surround application where multiple speakers are spreadout around the room, use the 90deg file and point the UMIK-1 at the ceiling.

Bought this to measure my home theatre after treatment installation. Learning curve is there but measurements seem accurate enough.

Used it to tune room modes in recording space. Not a technical person but the software gives clear readings that helped position bass traps.

I have been fitting my listening room with acoustic panels from Aural Exchange and using this mic in conjunction with Room Equalization Wizard (free software) to measure progress. The umik1 works perfectly, although I use it on my full sized mic stand to place the mic at exactly the right positions. Operating instructions of both the mic and REW are good, but it is quite steep learning curve – good fun though!

I bought this to satisfy my cravings for audio related data such as measurement of speaker characteristics or the performance of a system in a room (not to mention as an aid in setting levels accurately or responding to problems with EQ if available). Vastly easier to just “plug n’ play” with REW. Very easy to get dozens of measurements going for further analysis if you have the cables you need etc. I am highly confident that the measurements to about 1-3 khz are very accurate, and mostly confident that the measurement out to 20 khz is usable. You can spend a lot more on even more accurate mics, but at this phase I am not sure I need very high precision. BTW having both 0-degree and 90-degree calibration files for the UMIK makes it a lot more useful to everyday measurement scenarios. The hard part, really, is mastering the art of measurement itself which can be a challenge, and learning how to EQ to the measurements.
