Soundproofing A Portable Generator

Soundproofing a portable generator has become a challenge in these days due to the high levels of noise that generators make. There is no such thing as a quiet generator, buyers pay high amount for these generators mostly used for emergency power only during power failure.

Many acoustical engineers have worked extensively to develop affordable noise control solutions for portable generators. Experts recommend the use of an auxiliary sound dampening barrier fence that can be built around the generator. These fences can be made to look attractive and blend in with existing home and buildings. These type of fence can be fabricated and assembled an individual using soundproofing materials together with fencing and other building materials that can be purchased from a hardware store.

  • The internal space has to be taken care with a minimum distance between the inside of the fence and the generator. Always follow what manufacturers recommend, a minimum clearance of 18” to 24” around the generator to ensure adequate room for access to the generator and proper air flow.
  • Height of the fence should be minimum of six feet tall or twice the height of the generator, whichever is tallest. The six foot height is the minimum height required to block noise from a listener at ear level, maybe height of eight feet or more, depending on the height of nearby houses.
  • The Fence are mostly constructed using a standard wooden fence which will provide a structure that can blend in with the house and yard. Some generator owners may opt for a cinder block wall or chain link fence. It’s recommended that you use heavy duty materials to support weight and sound.
  • Sound Barrier Materials are required on the inside fence, between the support poles and wooden fence panels. A sheet of mass-loaded vinyl with superior noise blocking capabilities and density will do the needful. The noise barrier should be installed loosely on the inside of the fence and cover the fence from top to bottom. Make sure the bottom of the barrier is enclosed well to avoid any kind of sound leak.
  • Sound absorption materials are required on the inside of the fence, on top of the noise barrier. Material needs to be rigid and thick, which means that it will not reflect noise from the generator, which will eliminate acoustical reverberations which may amplify within the fence structure.
